January 28, 2003:  NIOSH issues CBRN Anniversary Present to Interspiro

In late January 2002, NIOSH began accepting application for certification to the new CBRN standard for first responder protection. Now one year later, NIOSH has its second CBRN Approval to Interspiro for its latest versions of the Spiromatic S and Spirotek SCBAs (Self-contained breathing apparatus).

Interspiro was the first to receive CBRN Approval on the Spiromatic SCBA in June 2002.  Following that success, NIOSH and the Army’s SBCCOM performed tests on the Spiromatic-S series SCBA that lead to this most recent approval.

The CBRN tests expose SCBA to Mustard and Sarin terror agents and determine the ability of the SCBA to withstand that exposure without allowing dangerous levels of agent to pass through the mask to the face and lungs.

The specific Spiromatic-S version receiving CBRN Approval is the high pressure version of the Spiromatic-S3.  The Spirotek version is the Spirotek-3.  Both respirators comply with NFPA 1981, 1997 Edition so now qualify as “all-hazard” SCBAs: for use in fire, IDLH, and WMD environments.  These are the only SCBAs to be so qualified, to date.
